ЁЯУЦ Introduction
The food we eat cannot be used directly by our body cells. It must first be broken down into smaller and simpler substances. This process is known as digestion.
The digestive system helps in breaking down food, absorbing nutrients and eliminating undigested waste from the body.
ЁЯОп Definition
The digestive system is a group of organs that mechanically and chemically breaks down food, absorbs useful nutrients and helps eliminate waste materials from the body.
ЁЯзй Major Parts of the Digestive System
- Mouth тАУ Ingestion and initial digestion
- Pharynx тАУ Helps transfer food
- Esophagus тАУ Carries food to the stomach
- Stomach тАУ Stores and mixes food
- Small Intestine тАУ Main site of digestion and absorption
- Large Intestine тАУ Absorbs water and some electrolytes
- Rectum тАУ Temporarily stores feces
- Anus тАУ Eliminates feces

ЁЯСД 1. Mouth
Digestion begins in the mouth. Teeth break food into smaller pieces while the tongue mixes it with saliva.
Saliva contains the enzyme Salivary Amylase, which begins the digestion of starch.
ЁЯег 2. Stomach
The stomach is a muscular, sac-like organ that temporarily stores food and mixes it with gastric secretions.
- HCl: Creates an acidic environment and helps destroy many harmful microorganisms.
- Pepsin: Begins the digestion of proteins.
- Mucus: Protects the stomach lining from acid.
The partially digested food becomes a semi-liquid substance called chyme.
ЁЯзк 3. Small Intestine тАУ Main Site of Digestion
The small intestine is the most important part of the digestive tract because most chemical digestion and nutrient absorption occur here.
Three Main Parts
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
The inner lining contains finger-like projections called villi. They increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption.
ЁЯлА Accessory Digestive Organs
Liver
The liver produces bile, which helps in the digestion of fats.
Gall Bladder
The gall bladder stores bile and releases it into the small intestine when required.
Pancreas
The pancreas produces pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes.
ЁЯТз 4. Large Intestine
The large intestine mainly absorbs water and electrolytes. The remaining material becomes more solid and forms feces.
ЁЯЪ╜ 5. Rectum and Anus
The rectum temporarily stores feces. The waste is then eliminated through the anus. This process is called egestion.
тЪб Major Steps of Digestion
- Ingestion: Taking food into the body
- Digestion: Breaking food into simpler substances
- Absorption: Taking nutrients into the bloodstream
- Assimilation: Using absorbed nutrients by body cells
- Egestion: Removing undigested waste

ЁЯУЪ Conclusion
The human digestive system is a well-organized group of organs that breaks food into simpler nutrients, absorbs useful substances and eliminates undigested waste.
Remember: The small intestine is the major site for digestion and absorption of nutrients.
